Spring Tick and Flea Protection: When Should You Start?

Mersin’s warm, sunny days are already here, and spring is clearly in the air. It’s the perfect season for long coastal walks, rolling around on the grass with your furry friend in the parks, and enjoying nature together. But as the weather warms up, ticks and fleas wake up too.

Many pet owners visiting our clinic ask, “Summer hasn’t even started yet. Isn’t it too early for parasite prevention” At Anka Veterinary Clinic in Mezitli, Mersin, we prepared this guide to explain the most common spring parasite and skin problems we see, and why early protection matters.

01The Weather Is Warming Up: When Does the Risk Really Start

In mild coastal cities like Mersin, spring starts earlier than most people expect. Tick and flea eggs can hatch when temperatures reach around 15°C. From early March, parks, gardens, and the shoreline can turn into perfect breeding grounds for these parasites. Waiting until “mid-summer” may leave your pet unprotected during the most critical spring period.

"Fleas don’t just live on the skin. If your pet swallows them while scratching, they may become intestinal parasites and drain your pet’s energy."

02Are Ticks and Fleas Just About Itching

Treating external parasites as a minor irritation is a serious mistake. While feeding, ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis, which may lead to joint pain and severe blood disorders. Fleas can cause anemia through blood loss and intense allergic skin reactions known as flea allergy dermatitis. In short, parasite prevention is an essential part of your pet’s overall health and preventive care.

03The “My Cat Never Goes Outside” Myth

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that indoor cats do not need parasite protection. In reality, flea eggs and ticks can enter your home without your cat ever going outside. They can travel in on shoe soles, clothing, small plant debris, or airflow from open windows. Indoors, warm conditions allow parasites to survive and multiply quickly.

04Spot-on, Collar, or Tablet: How to Choose the Right Option

There are many parasite-control products on the market, but not every product is suitable for every pet. Age, weight, breed sensitivity, and medical history all matter. Cheap products bought from markets or unreliable sources that contain agricultural pesticides can cause chemical skin burns and even neurological toxicity. The safest approach is to choose protection with your veterinarian and your pet’s full medical profile in mind.

💡 Frequently Asked Questions

When can I bathe my pet after applying a spot-on product?

Spot-on products need time to absorb into the skin and spread through the lipid layer. To preserve efficacy, avoid bathing for the first 48 hours and protect your pet from rain during that period.

If I see a tick, can I remove it myself?

No. Pulling a tick out by hand or with improper tools can cause regurgitation or leave mouthparts in the skin, which may lead to abscesses and infection. If you notice a tick, do not intervene; contact your veterinarian immediately.

Do oral parasite tablets harm the liver or kidneys?

We use only approved, safety-tested modern formulations. When prescribed by a veterinarian at the correct dose for your pet's weight and condition, these products are considered safe and provide longer-lasting protection.
