Mersin Humidity and Pet Skin Health: Is It Just Fleas

We all love Mersin's summer months and long walks along the coast. However, this beautiful season is quite challenging for our furry friends due to high humidity and oppressive heat.

Most pet owners immediately think of fleas or ticks when their pets start itching. However, in cities like Mersin where humidity peaks, the real culprit behind itching is often a compromised skin barrier. Let's examine the most common skin problems we encounter at Anka Veterinary Clinic.

01The Impact of High Humidity on Pets

Cats and dogs only sweat through their paws and noses. When Mersin's famous humidity gets trapped in your pet's thick fur, the skin cannot breathe. This disrupts the natural flora, leading to rapid bacterial and fungal growth. If your pet is constantly licking their paws or scratching their ears, it might be humidity-related eczema or fungal infections rather than fleas.

"Shaving your pet down to the skin won't cool them down; it leaves them completely defenseless against sunburns and skin cancer risks."

02Myth vs. Fact: Does Shaving Keep Them Cool

The most common request we receive in summer is to shave pets completely. This is a mistake. A pet's coat acts as insulation, blocking out the summer heat. Instead of a full shave, we recommend "undercoat removal" to thin out dead hair. This allows the skin to breathe while maintaining protection from the sun.

03Walking in Mezitli and Paw Burns

Asphalt temperatures can reach 60-70 degrees Celsius in the summer, causing serious paw burns within seconds. Never forget the 5-second rule: Place the back of your hand on the asphalt. If you can't hold it for 5 seconds, it's not safe for your pet.

04Indoor Climate Control and Nutrition Support

Skin health must also be supported from the inside. Ensure AC units don't blow directly on your pet. To prevent skin damage caused by humidity, switching to clinical diets or supplements rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids is highly beneficial.

💡 Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my pet smell bad in the summer?

The persistent humidity creates an oily buildup on the skin, which is a perfect environment for bacteria. A bad smell is often a precursor to a skin infection. Clinical examination is necessary.

How often should I wash my pet during the summer?

Frequent washing strips away the skin's protective oil layer. Unless there's a specific skin condition, we recommend washing dogs no more than once a month. Cats should not be washed at all unless medically required.

What should I do if my pet burns their paws?

Rinse the paws with cool water for at least 10 minutes. Never apply home creams, yogurt, or oils. Contact our clinic immediately due to the high risk of infection.
